' Three Visiting Teams Beatpi gisborne v. napiek club Saturday should-, , have .been one of Napier 's big days as faf as Soccer football was concerned, for there were three visiting clnb teams from Gisborne which h_ad come down to "try conclusions with three Napier cltib teams. The -two playing areas in Nelson Park, were both, iu a somewhat waterlogged condition, and spills were numerous during the afternoon.' Bright coloured costumes • soon hecame muddy, those of the goalies being, partieularly so f or the ground under each goai was a quagmire. It was a wet ball, and a ■ wet and slippery ground, and it was not a 'day, to see Soccer-. of the best grade, but nnder ihe circumstances .the play was surprisingly good. The Napier players adapted their play to .the conditionS prevaiiing hetter than the Gisborne teams did, and the . consequence was a victory for the Napier teams in all three games. United (Napier") v. Mercafitile (Gisborne) United forwards on the whole kept the ball in play in the Mercantile eiid, and with short kicking iactics gradually "put on a score of five goals. Merf cantile attacked vigorously at- times, but were strongly repulsed, Sweeney, the United goalkeeper, playing a partieularly fine defensivie game. Of the .United forwards J. Vannan and H. Hawthorne were always well to the fore, and Vannan distinguished himself by again recording the "hat trick," registering three goals, a perl formance which he has given several times during the seasoii. Goals were scored for . United ,by J. .Vannan (3) and H. Hawthorne (2), Bangers wiuning by five goals to niL ■ . Mr J. Briggs refereed. Eangers fNapier) v, Thistle ; (Gisborne) -- ji This was a more even game thani that between Eangers and Mercantile. j The game was fast and interesting,i despite the state of the ground andunsatisfactory weather conditions.j Throughout most of #the game there was very little between the two sides,| but the Eangers' backs were safer, aud, the kieking of their forwards wassurer.
