TEMPERANCE WORK

Annual W.C.T.U. Convention Held at Waipukurau Members and delegates to the annual convention of tho Ilawke's Bay District Women 's Christian Temperance Union gatliered iu the St. Andrew 'a Hall, Waipukurau, when Adjutant Christopher conductcd 'the devotional service. District oilicers were preseiited witb posies of spring flowers by thc prosident of thc Waipuluu au Union. . Delegates from Hastings, Dannevirke, Waipukurau, kaipawa, Havelock North and Napier were-presenl. - The annual report presented by tliR secretary, Mr S. W. Webb, was a comprehensive one, compiled from the refrom all unions in the district. Miss Kirk, Dominion organiser^ presented the Waipukurau Union with a banner, worked beautifully in silk and hand-painted, representing the world. The banner was worked by the union 'a secretary, Miss Burdett. Miss Kirk epoke of the temperance membership eampaign for 1940. Mrs Wilson spoke briefly on t.lie alphabet from A to N, giviug inslances of drink in all countries, for and against, showing how all countries are iighting for the sanio cause. Letters of greeting were sent to the Dominion pfesident, Mrs Hiett. Noontide devotions wero conducted, and for luncheon tho delegates adjourned to the Waipukurau tea-rooms. In the afternoon Miss Kirk, Dominion organiser, spoke on her work in the law Courts and temperances, and on how to be a good union member; also on plans for thc coming poll. Mrs Wilson expressed the thanks of the convention to Miss Kirk for her interesting and helpful talks. The clection of officers resulted: — President, Mrs Hickmott; secretary, Mr3 Webb; treasurer, Mrs Pinalcs: vicepresident. Mrs Lewis. The invitation to hold thc itcxt convention at Napier was acecpled, and the convention was closed with Ihe «Bene,diction.
