WINDSOR PARK FACILITIES

Extension of Swimming Pool C0NCERT PLATFORM Extension of the swimming pool, the erection of a band stand, provision of bathing sheds and convenienees are among the works to be carried out during the next few months at Windsor Park under the schedule prepared by the Hastings Borough Council in its supplementary works estimate for tho cuTrent year. The total cost involved in the improvements, development and additional facilities to be effected at this ever-increasing popular borough reserve amounts to over £1000. When announcing the intentions of the Council as regards Windsor Park the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, this morning said that the whole of the work proposed under the supplementary estimates was being carried out from the money in the Eeserve Fund, which was the accumulation of last year's surpluses and the addition of the annual payment of the Hawke 's Bay Electric Power Board of about £4500, together with £5000 Government subsidy. It was proposed to allocate £1096 to Windsor Park this year and of this sum £376 would be subsidy from the Employment Promotion Board, the condition of this subsidy being that it be utilised fctr the employment of registered men on relief. "One of the major proposals for Windsor Park is the extension of the present swimming pool to twice its size," said Mr. Maddison. "The cost of this work is estimated at about £300 and there will be available £134 in subsidy. The present pool has been found quite inadequate for the big number of people who use it and this includes a number of campers. I may add, that it is the intention of the council to continue to allow the pool to be free to everybody." The increasing popularity of this reservo has resulted in there being an urgent and an immediate need for the extension of the convenienees and other services if the park is to comply with the Health Act requirements. Additional convenienees, as well as bathing sheds will be provided and the drain at the entrance from " Sylvan road will be piped. This entrance is also to be greatly improved in addition to the general lay-out of that area between the fence and the tennis courts. This work is estimated to cost about £270 of which there is a subsidy of £80. "Another very fine acquisition, and one that it is felt has been long required, is that of a band stand, or concert paltf orm, ' ' said Mr. Maddison. "The Council has allocated £130 for this purpose and the major cost will be labour so there will be available a subsidy of £97. It is hoped that with this stand available the Hastiugs Citizens' Band and the Pipe Band will be able to visit this park more frequently during the year in future than has been the case in the past. Then again the Hastings and Distriet Progress League has undertaken to arrange for concert parties to visit Windsor Park during the summer evenings." Another interesting item in the schedule is the deeision to add to the fleet of canoes which have proved so popular in the past. The council has agreed to expend £69 in this direction and expects to bring the fleet up to a total of 20, which will include a number of boats that will accommodate a number of people in each. Preparatory work for the planting of trees and shrubs in this reserve is also to' be carried out and it is proposed to spend £75, of which all but £10 will be subsidy money, on this work. Other items on the schedule of works for Windsor Park are as follow: — Extension of convenienees near Selwood road £80, extension of dish-washing cubicle £15, extension of boat house £15, painting buildings £10, attention to ceiling in dining shelter £10, and tar-sealing main entrance £10.
