BEST-KEPT GARDEN COMPETITION
Prize-Money of £25 Offered LEAGUE PROPOSALS Next Monday tbere will be launcbed wbat is boped will be an annual event in Hastings, a competition for tbe best-kept residentiai garden in tbe borough. Tbe competition is being conducted by tbe Hastings and District Progress League, and tbis year it is offering prize-money to tbe value of £25, as well as awarding cups. Tbo underlying cnotive of tbis proposal is to encourage tbe citizens to take a pride in tbeir homes and tbeir immediate sura oundings, so engendering a spirit of civic pride in tbeir town. It is felt tbat wben tbe" people -bave fully appreciated the joy and pleasuro to be obtained from having tbeir immediate surroundings beautiful tbey will more readily take a keen and appreciative interest in tbe beautification of tbe town and set themselves out to make Hastings tbe most beautiful borough in Dominion. Tbere can be no doubting tbat tbs awakening of widespread interest in tbe town in beautiful surroundings should be one of tbe functions of sucb an organisation as tbe Progress League, and when giving consideration to tbe proposal to conduct sucb'a competition tbe league considered tbat unless something really wortb-wbile was attained it would serve no good purpose to hold sucb a competition. For tbis reason it was felt tbat some inducement should be offered to ensure tbat tbe competition would resul't in some tangible benefit to tbe town. Thus it will be noted tbat altogether 13 prizes are being offered, ranging from £10 for firSt awrad, £6 for second, £3' for third, and 10 consolation prizes of 10/- each. Tbis motive also accounts for one of tbe conditions of tbe competition being tbat unless tbere are 50 entries, the competition will be cancelled and tbe entry fee of 2/6 returned. It bas been decided to conflne tbe competition to a section of a quarter of an acre or under, and for wbicb no outside labour bas been ecnployed for cultivation. Tbe gardens of entrants will "be inspected during November next and again during the following April, and points will be aliotted on tbe condition of tbe gardens during these two periods as follow: — , Pointis Design 8 Taste and harmony 10 Cultivation 12 Maintenance and lawns .... 20' V egetables 20 Flowers .•••»•••»«»•»•••••: 20 Treeg and ebrubr 1Q, - ■ j t i j 1 * .i*-' * Total 100. . Autbority has been granted th* judges to allot np to 10 additional points for . any special feature not onumerated in tbe above list, and it is interesting to note tbat it bas been decided tbat tbe maintenance and cultivation of tbe street frontage will be taken into consideration wben allotting points for tbe maintenance of lawns. Incidentally, a further condition is tbat tbe "plunging" of pot plants immediately before tbe date of judging will not be permitted. - Entries wRl- open on Monday next and close on September 20, -
