CHRISTCHURCH, TMs Day. —'The Budget will contain reference to the use of the public credit to a greater extent thau it has been used before," said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, in au interview this morniug. Already, he said, the Government "was using the public credit for housiug purposes, aud it infcended to nse it in the future for the erection of public buildings and the creation of other assets for the State. "That is what I mean when I say fchere is no necessity to wait before Btarting necessary works," he added. "The day has gone by when we needed to wait for any work that was necessary, "We can do it tander the authority that has been given to us by the people, and we will not do any less than what wa promlsed to do." The Prime Minister said that what«ver legislation was necessary for liberalising the State Advances scheme would be passed in the eoming season. It was intended to make it easier for people to build their own homes in addition to what the Government was doing in tEe erection of homes for letting .purposes. Regret that he could not remain in Christchurch to see the second Test match htween the AU Blacks and the Springboks was expressed this morning by Mr Savage. "There are urgent matters Tequiring my attention in Wellington, " he said, "and I mnst be back "there on Saturday morning. Por that reason I will be unable to see the Test match." In xeferring to the work of the ses»Ion, Mr Savage said it was hoped that it would be possible to present the Budget within-a week of the opening. There would be a number of Bills introduced, ineluding an important mining Bill, and there would be amendments to many of tne existing laws.
