Combined Meet of Taranaki Clubs FIELDS REVIEWED

(By

The Taranaki and Egmont- Wanganui Hunts hold their annual race meeting to-m?rrow and Saturday on the New Plymouth racecourse. First-day accep-tanc-es are larger than they have been for years and there should be a good day's sprint. Hawke's Bay stables will be represented by Penology, Paetutu, Flame Queen, Iddo, "Vrykemist, Cletrae and Buster Brown. The win and place machine will be in operation. Following is a brief review of the fields. TRIAL HUNTERS ' STEEPLECHASE. About Two Miles. Most of these aceeptors are unknown to the majority of racing folk, the conditions being for qualified hunters that have never won over jumps. The three best baclced may be PLATTER, PAETUTU and ROYAL EIRE. WEREROA STAKES. Five Furlongs. Maiden conditions. This field includes some most promising young performers and the race will be by no means an easy race to win. Fafner enjoys a -repntation of being some good, but unfortunately recently contracted a eolcJ, so may not be at his best. Autp Sweep will be remembereu as paying a big dividend at Wellington in Jfily when he acted as runner-up. Othevs who either gallop fiust in privqte qr have shown form in publie are Flame Queen, Girl Pat, Script, Tomoana, Ripple, Race Boy, Kia Ora and Valroy. Tliree that may appeal to backers are AUTO SWEEP, FAFNER and' RIPPLE. WHENUAKURA HACK HANDICAP. Seven Furlongs. Hunting Queen is in solid conditioil, while Winsome Lu, back to hacks, cannot but be given a good chance. Mustang reads well, but the distance may be too short for Spender. Lady Dianq, Lickem, Liane and Middlo xnust aU have hopes, while Even Money looks lucky in getting in at 71bs. above tlxo minimum. From Auckland come good reports anent Barricade. Middle is a recent Bra-celet winner, Iddo is oue to be passed over merely because it. is a flat race. _ All Spirit, Ngatirahiri and Master Limond Tead the best of the others. The event is very open, with perhaps most monetary support forthcoming for. EVEN MuNEY,' BARRI^ CADE and WINSOME LU. EGMONT-WAN GANUI HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE j 2} miles. Croydon won over country at the Wanganui, meeting in June. Slcepy has had oply three starts, notchipg two firsts and a second, so he yeada well on form. Kinkle was third to All Irish and Sloepy at Ellerslie two weeks back. Wykemist has only to ju&p the post and rails without stifling same to possess a very fair chance. Riogbail won over country early in the season, but has shown disappointing form since. Booklaw may do best of the remainder. What will be better baeked than SLEEP Y, KINKLE pnd WYKEMIST? WAIHAU HANDICAP. v Six Furlongs. Taitoru may find the distance a little too short, still he is a very fit horse. Gom Mission, too, has racing condition, a factor to remember in the early spring. Fersen and Lowenberg are better over a longer course. Mata Hari, judging on Gisborne form, has slipped. Airing was second at Bulls, with the Winter Gup winner, Catalogue, among the "also rans." The others hardly appeal on form. The favourite may come from AIRING, GOLD MISSION and TAITORU, LADIES ' BRACELET miles. Aube, with I2st., has his job ahead of him. He will not be ridden by his rsual pilot, Mr. Plummer, N. A. Cowie having gone oVer to- ride the Arausio gelding. Cletrae "is useful amohg this class, while Hirangi is due for a win since in three races 6uch as this he has been second eaeh time, besides finishing in a similar place in a hack race at Trentham in July. Over half this field have been weiglited at the minimum, which shows that they aref • either ooor or unknown quantities. Form will be the guide, so the best backed look like being HIRANGI, CLETRAC and &UBE. WAVERLEY HACK HANDICAP. Six Furlongs. Reserved for this, Airing would be the logical favourite. Ned Cuttle is lair and among his wins is a w.f.a. race. Card Sharper has not come up to expectations. Te Huia is a most promising haek, while the Okawa-bred Oute Melody is fast. but has not raced since last season, when she won two juveuiie races in the Waikato. She hails from the same stable as To Huia, but races iu a diifcrent ownership. Others to attract attention are Dawuing Light, Dauciug Lady, Barricade and Lady Hoariri. Recovery may be looked for from TE HUIA, AIRING and NED CUTTLE.
