IONA COLLEGE PUPILS GIVE DISPLAY OF DRILL AND DRAMATIC WORK

An excellent display of the drill and , dancing and also an enterfaining sample . of the dramatie work of the pupils of Iona College, Havelock North^ was eni joyed last evening by a good number of parents and friends who were received by the principal, Miss McNeill. The first part of the programme consisted of a splendid variety of drill exercises and country dancing. The pupils were di.vided into three groups for their exercises, senior, intermediate and junior, and throughout, the exercises were faultlessly carried out, giving cvidence of the careful and eapable training from which the pupils reeeive great bcnefit. The very neat and tidy uniforms added eonsiderably to the general appearance of tlie drill which was carried out to musie. Mgure marching and balance bench drill by the seniors and hoop-marching by the intermediates was equally well displayed. Several country dances were given Py tho pupils, these including "Eppiug Forest, ' > by the juniors, "Hunsdon House,,, by fho seniors, ' ' Mage on a Crcc," by the intermediates. A parti.cularly attractive maypole dance was given by thp juniors and two dances in costume were heartily apjfiauded, these being a mazurka by the seniors and a threesome reel by seniors and intermediates. This part of the programme was followed by an historical sketch "Catherine Parr ' ' by Mauri ce Baring and a one-act play "The Romany Road" by Harold BrighouseT Both plays wiere splendidly acted by the pupils and were watched with much interest.
