Maddison, at the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Tearooms, yesterday. The president, Mr. Hugh W. C. Baird, presided, and the opportunity was taken by members of the chamber tq assure Mr. Maddison of their appreciation of his wonderful services to th® borough and of their support and co-operation. "We have always appreciated Your Worship as the chief citizen of our town, and have fully realised that you are doing yeoman service for Hastings and the district," said Mr. Baird in extending a welcome to the Mayor, " Ws as businessmen iecognise the very great work and the vast amouut of

time that you, as Mayor, has to give in the service of others and the attention of other people 's business. We also know just how lax our citizens are in giving praise to men who servq them so well. I can assnre you that we are behind you and realise that you are giving of your very best." Following a comprehensive review by the Mayor of borough administration and activities (reported elsewhere), Mr. W. E. There was Aothing stagnate about the policy of tho Mayor and his council, and it was wonderfully reassuring to find such udmiiable traits in these men, "It is obvious that all is well as far as the borough administration is coacerned," he said, "and I, too, welcome this opportunity of assuring you that this chamber and the businessmen of Hastings fully appreciate what you and tho others are doing."
