Kelly, the presidenfc of the Hastings Club, in his speech to the competitors prior to, the presentation of trophies reminded members of the ciub of the credit that was due to the pioneers of 20 years ago for the ground work that had been done on the Hastings links, making it possible for members to enjoy the excellent course they now had to play on. When the pioneers took charge of the present course xt was nothing but a sandy waste devoid of trees or vegetation of any kind and the work of breaking it in was heartbreaking. If the present rate of progress is maintained the course, with its increasing turf and plantations of trees and ornamental shrubs, would in a few years vio with any course in the Dpmini.on^ but the work of tho pioneers ^

should not be overlooked or forgotten. The tournSment was concluded . on Saturday evening with a very" successful dance held in the clubhouse on the course, when the visiting playera were the guests of the Hastings Club.
