Japanese Activity off Swatow JJNITED STATES WARNING (Received 30, 2.15 p.mj LONDON, Aug. 29. The Daily Telegrapli's Hongkoug feorrespondent says it is reliably reported that Japanese warships are etopping and searcliing all ships off Swatow. The destroyer Delight is protecting British nationals at Foochow and will watcb any Japanese attempt to blockade the South-west coast. Mr Cordell Hull ,United States Secretary of State, announced at Washington, that' he had uotified China and Japan that he would liold .them responsible for daniage and injury to TJnited States property and nationals. The New York Timee interprets th • Note as a warning to Japan not to jnterfere with American vessels. The Chinese Embassy formally accepted Mr Hull's statement and reiterated willingness for peace. The Japanese Embassy maintained silcnce. The British and Japanese . uaval authorities deny tliat the British eteamer Shenking was stopped — nn earlier report stated that she had been •—and deny that Vico-Admiral LittJe protested. They explain that a Japanese warship signalled the Shenking and allowed her to pasa when she disclosed her identity. The British Navy chartered her to assist in the evaeuation of Shanghai and to bring uaval and military supplies from Hongkong. Huge TJnion Jaelts have been painted on the Canadian Paciiic Empress of Japan, which is loading at Vancouver for theTTnent.
