Towels at School
"There is no doubt that community toweis are used in schools "and they are a danger to the children," said Mr F. C. Race at he Dominion schooi committees' conference at New Plymouthi. The system of using roller toweis was regarded by the conference as insanitary and it was decided to ask the Department of Education to gazette it as such. All schooi committees will be recommended t° insist on children taking their own toweis. Car-Parking Sfation. A large new car parking station is proposed in Christchurch city at a tota] cost of abotit £30,000. A Christchurch company holds an option over about half an acre of land in Worcested street West, and with a right-of-way from Hereford street. The option has not yet been exercised, but working plans have already been prepared. The price of the property is said to be sliglitjy less than £12,000, and the cost of building is expected to be £18,000. The building will have a capacity of 310 vchicles. Rain Not Wanted. 0 It has been truly said that it ia tmpossible to please everybody. The rain of last week and again last night Jvas welcomed by the greater part of the Hawke's Bay province, but there was one district, apparently, that did not relish so much rain. This is the Maraetotara district, where during the winter moBths there has been more rain than in most parts of the province. Last week's rain caught the sheepfarmers in that area napping, and in ionsequenee ' several are reported to have lost quite a number of lambs. Ctvic Square Activity. , The Civic Square site presented an unusually busy aspect this morning when, in addition to about 30 men carrying out the work of excavating to enable areas to be refilled with better soil, and generally leveliing off the site, more particularly in the vieinity of the Cenotaph, there were several different classes o.f machinery on tho job. There were two lorries for tho removal of the rubble ; a tractor with a lawn roller attached to level off certain areas with a view to lajdng down lawns ; and a well-sinking derrick. The wellsmkers have struck a supply of water, But whether there will be an adequate supply for the whole area is not yet known. It is the intention of tho council to instal sprinklers in the square similar to those giving service at the sports ground at Cornwall Park, while a good supply of water will be required for the fountain, which it is hoped will be one of the principal features of this new breathing-spaco. Citrus Fruits. Though at this time of the year it is usual for citrus fruits, particularly island oranges and mandarius, to be clieap, from inquiries made this morning it would appear that this year there wiJj he no material change in the prices. In the past it has been possibie to purchase anything up to 12 and 14 or even more oranges for 1/-, this period boing looked upon by housewives as "mafinalade time," but at present the cheapest oranges are being retailed at from six to eight a shilling. The reason for there being no fluctuation in tlie quantities is attributed to the fixation of prices. "It is the consumer who is paying, not the retailers or wholesalers", said one man intimately associated with the citrus fruit trade. "The Government is not alone in throwing away cases of fruit, as reported from Auckland," he added. "WlKAjesalers are doing the same thiug. Theje are plenty of oranges available, and certainly there is a good demand for them, but the consumers are not getting tho quantity that really they should be obtaining at this time of th» .year."
