Waipawa Lodge Meets. The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Abbotsford Lodge, Manchester Unity Oddfellows, was held on Saturday night, the N.G. Bro. N. MacPhersou presiding. One new candidate was proposed. An invitation was received from the Loyal Hastings Lodge to take part in a bowls competition on September 21. Bros. Kingston and MacPherson were appointed to arrange for the necessary teams. A hearty welcome was extended to P.G. Bro. H. W. Gallagher, now resident in Taradale, who was visiting the lodge. A degree lecture was later given by Bro. Gallagdifer, who was for many years the lecture master of ! the lodge. • State Houses for Waipukurau. Final negotiations are at pfesent held up pending a visit from a departmental official, but it is possible a block of houses under the State Housing Sclieme will be built in Waipukurau withm a short time. The department has been making inquiries, and it is understood that a block of six sections in Uoodger street will probably be selected for the first buildings while a larger area., which would provide space for over 100 houses, in Racecourse road district, is also under consideration . The Borougli Council's housing survey has revealed the immediate necessity for at least 50 new homes. Waipukurau Chess Championships. In championship • chess matches at the Waipukurau club's rooms on Friday night, D. W. Neild beat W. England, J. Huntley Walker beat W. England, G. H. Stapleton beat G. Stapleton and G. Wiggans beat G. F». ! •Fowler. Ncild is leading witli a record of seven wins and oue loss, Walker being ncxt Avith live wins and three losses. Other competitors are: — Fowler, three wins and three losses, G. O. Stapleton tliree and three, Bolms three and tliree, Wilson, three an three, Wiggins three and five, Cj. H. Stapleton two and tliree, Little two aud four. England two and four lleckin two. Rugby Queen CarnivaL ' The final votes in the Central H.B. Rugby Sub-TJnion's Queen Carnival will be cast a,t 10.30 p.m. on Weduesday, and the result will be announced that night. On Saturday's count, positions were as follow:- — Ongaonga-Tikokino-Waipawa 11,930, Porangahau 11,452, Waipukurau 10,640, Takapau 9,164, Otane-Omakere-Te Aute 6470.
