WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Puketitiri Gathering The Puketitiri Women ?s Institute held its sixth birthday party on the 'afternoon of Thursday, August 19. A number of visitors were welcomed by the pr'esident, Mrs Nicholls, and all joined heartily in the proceedings. Games and competitions occupied the ■first part of the afternoon, wiixners beisg as follows: — Musical drawing, won by Mrs Holt. Han'ging quoits, won by Mrs Paine, A" page fot a Link Scrapbook, 'Mrs Holt, with an exquisite design in colour of natiVe trees and shrubs bordering an original verse on the subject. Mrs Tanner's black and white drawing and original verse on the kowhai was awarded second place, with Mrs Jensen's photos of a display of eggshell and other handwork third. All. the exhibits in this competition were extremely good and will make a most attractive and interesting album to send to our "link" in England. The points competition for this month was sultana scones won by Mrs Brice, Mrs Carswell being second, and Mrs Jensen third. Papef flowers, Mrs Holt with a charm* ingly natnral bunch of daffodils. A presentation was made to Mrs L. Hallett, this being her first appearance at the Women's Ihstitute since her marjiage .last month. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Tanner, Brownlie and Brice, who served afternoon tea in the supper room, where -the large birthday cake, made by Mrs H. Pedersen and tastefully decorat* ed by Mrs Skinner, occupied the place of honour. A hearty vote of thanks was' passed to these two ladies, and when the cake had been sampled all voted it an outstaifding success, as flavour, texture and appearance were all absolutely perfect. Several members then staged a playreading, "Sewing for the Heathen" and seemed quite successful in entertaining their audience.
