HASTINGS ORPHANS
Seventh Korero of Season ENJOYABLE PR0GRAMME Tho seventh korero of the season of the Hastings Orphans ' Club was held last night, there being an enthusiastic gathering of Orphans. The programnle opened tvith songs by Orphan Jack Sullivan, followed by .Orphan Guy Haraenberg, who told a series of stories. Orphan P. J. Priest gave two reeitations which wero niuch appreciatea. Tho short talk section of the programme was supplied by Orphan S. S. Murdcn- who gave an interesting and Instructive talk On "Battery manufacture," illustrating his talk by samples of a battery in the various stages of manufacture. The speaker explained in detail the funetions of the various parts of batteries used for different purposes and a series of questions by Orphans enabled the speaker to explain the cause of many common battery troubles. • At this stage. the supper adjournment was takou and a -visitor, Mr J. Greenbank, followed with two humorous short stories. Orphan J. Sawyer was in good form in a brackot of baritone solos. He was followed by an instrumental trio, Orphana Lord (piano), Mummery (violin) and Marsicano ( 'cello). Two enjoy able songs were contributed by Orphan R. H. Cloueton, who was followed again by Orphan Hardgnberg, who introdaced four new "short-story artists," including Chief Orphan D. M. Campbell. whose subjeet was "My system of winning raffles." The club orchestra of 20 members was heard during the evening in a uumber of items. The sorero closed with the Closing Ode. and the singing of the National Authem. The next korero is to be held on Friday, September 10. The club is sliortly taking its orehesira and concert party to the Pukeora Sanatorinim and the Waipukurau Hospital.
