ONE-WICKET DEFEAT
N.Z.'s Magnificent Fight , Against Kent ROBERTS IN FORM (From the 8pecial Correspondent of the United , Prees Aasociation with the Team.) (Received 28/11,0 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 27. Kent defeated New Zealand by oue wicket. New Zealand made a grand fight when it seemed certain that they would be beaten easily. New Zealand**' cheap loss of the last four, wickets left the county an easy-looking task and when Kent had 109 for two wickets at lunch, the match seemed as good as over. New Zealand ywith brilliant bowling and fine fielding, then captured seven wickets in an hour. Roberts bowled a« accurately; and venomously as he has ever done in England. His figures, in a fine spell of su'stained effectiveness, were: 11 overs, two maidens, 23 runs, four wickets. Cowie strove manfully. Bowling at top_ paee, he took his hundredth wicket of the tour. The New Zealand fielding was faultless. Roberts made a superhuman onehanded living catch at first slip. Fourteen runs were required when th® last two batsmen beeame associated and New - Zealand might easily have won. Cowie almost howled one batsman, who chopped hard down on the ball — a very late hall— which ran^off but struck tho stumps heavily. The bails miraculously remained in position. After this escapo the lasO pair, amid wild excitementj scored the winning runs. , Details:- — • - ' NEW ZEALAND First Innings •*•••••••188 Second Innings ■ Vivian, c Chalk b' Todd ••••••••. 34 Hadlee, c Levett b Harding 47 Weir, Lb,w., b Wright 0 Carson, c Levett b Ashdown .... 20 Kerr, tun out 31 Tindill, c Harding, b Woolly. .... 40 Moloney, b Harding 75 Lamason, c Levett b -Lewis ...... 11' Roberts, c Harding b Wright ....
