One frequent cause of trouble in th# lay ing of veneers is variation in glue spread leading to localised "starved" areas and the possibility of blistering, states the Monthly News Letter of the Porests Division of the Council for .Scientific and Industrial Eesearch. Xravs are now being used overseas toi show up this and ' similar effects. Baiv ium oxide, a camparatively inert mat* erial, is added to the glue and prevents the penetration of the rays without in" terfering with its adhesive properties. The "starved" areas show np on a screen above the plywood. It is also claimed that it is possible nnder commereial conditions to use X-rays to show up other defects such as the presence of gaps, or splits in fhe~core, inequalities in the joining and knots, Tests have shown that hidden. defects in flush doors can be exposed in a similar manner. The a-pplication of X-rays in this way, and also for the purposes in wood-working field, seems to ofier dxstinct possibilities. •
