Technical Breach of Gaming Act

WELLINGTON, This Dav. Axising out of N.Z. Geographic Competition, No. 1" four young men were charged_ bofore Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., with establisliing a lottery. Detective-Sergeant Doyle said that about a week before publication, two of them were interviewed by a member of the staff of a paper and were advised that the contest was legnl, With minor alterations, and, if (hey could provide the paper with goo.d references as to their personal character, the paper would publish the details of tho contest. The net profit made by each was £2 9/8. There was no suggestion that they were not honest, but tliey had committed a definite breach of the Gaming Act. The magistrate took the view that the offence was not a serious breach of the, Act, but a technical one. He took it that next^time they would first consult a rn.em.ber of the legal profes- , lion, Each was fined £2 and costs.
