(By Telegraph-
AUCKLAND, Last Night. Work which has been in progress at" the Arapuni hydro-electric works for over two years came to fruition shortly before five o'clock on Wedncsday afternoon, when, after a week of preliminary testing, the ilfth uuit, known aS No. 7 generator, was "brought into operation without the slightest fuss or trouble of any deseription. The new turbine, a S0,000 horsepower nnit, with a capacity of 21,000 kilowatts, has already been in operation for two days, and the resident engineer at Arapuni, in a telephone conversation to-night, stated that it had proved eminently satisfactory. No. 8 unit, which is of similar design and power to that brought ' into op- , eration this week, has been partly installed, and it is expeeted that it should be brought into commission within eight or nine weeks. Power from the new unit will be pooled for the whole of the North Island. With the peak load for the winter well past, and the new unit practically ready for work, the district engineer of the Public Works Departhaent at Hamilton a-dvised the Auckland Electric Power Board last week that assistance from. the King's Wharf station would no longer be requiied, and it was shut down last Thursday night.
