GOLF TOURNAMENT OPENS

F. S. Budd at Head of Championship List MANY PLAYERS COMPETE Heavy rain overnight took the pace out of tho Bridge Pa course to-day when the Hastings Golf Club's annual tournament commenced. Eain fell .at intervals during the morning, but the wind was light from the north and temperatures were xnild. During the past six weeks the course had become rather fast and patchy under the influence of the dry spell, but the greens had been kept in good order by the watering system installed last year. Though the entries ih. the first case constituted a record, the change in the weather conditions resulted in a number of intending competitors dropping out of the play this morning. Tho entries aTe from a wide' area, Wellington, Wairarapa, Southern Hawke's Bay, Manawatu, Central Hawke's Bay, Wairoa and Gisborne being represented. Altogether there are„ over 40 visiting players. Considering the conditions this morning the standaTd of play was quite good. The majority of the players, however, returned cards that indicated tEey were playing below their handicaps. For the resumption of play this afterpoon conditions were very rnuch improved and a start was made with the elimination rounds.
