Mellington Rates Increase 4i Per Cent. - £22,000 MORE NEEDED

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Because of rising costs the Wellington Harbour Board deeided last night to increase its charges by £22,000, representing a rise of 41 per cent. Strong exception to the new tariff was taken by members representing couutry interests, and kn amendment was mo ed to defer the decision until the results of the year's working were Juiown. This, however, was defeated by six votes to four. The new se&le of charges is as folJows: — lAtBOKTEES AND EXPORTEKB £ Increase inward whari'age on general goods from 3/9 to 4/- & ton 6,500 Increase inward wharfage on wool from lOd to 1/- a bale 200 Increase inward labour on tiinber by 2d per 100ft. super .. 550 Increase inward wharfage on awkward and fragile packages and packages requiring extra Iabotir, etc., from 5/6 to 6/3 & ton 2,334 Increase transhipment rates ou general goods from 4/- to 4/6 a ton . « 1,487 Increase transhipment rates on wool from lOd to 1/- a bale . . 600 Increase transhipmeut rates on 1 produce from 3/6 to 4/- a tou 1,280 Increase transhipment rates ou awkward and fragile packages and packages requirtng extra . labour from 6/- to 7/-. a tou 467 lucreuso outward whari'age ou general goods from 1/6^10 2/a ton; increase outward wharfage on butter, cheese and fresh fruit from 1/- to 1/3 a toiij and tallow, pelts and hides from 1/3 to 1/6, a ton 2,700 Increase outward wharfage on, wool from 6d to 8d a balo 830 £16,053 SHIPS Increase the present pressing charge by 3d & bale 990 Increase the' charge for hatchway craues aud capstans by nu hour « 4,120 .
