Japanese Landing Forces Annihilated DESTROYER SUNK

WELLINGTON, This Day. Th'e Chinese consul received the following cablegram from Nanking last night: — "Under cover of a heavy barrage from over 30 Japanese warships massed outside Woosung, the Japanese attempted early yesterday morning to force a landing at several places near the Woosung fort. The Japanese achieved temporary suceess at Wentsaopang and Changhuapang, where about 1000 reached the shore, but after a severe engagement' the Chinese, with the aid of reinforcements and artillery, annihilated all thoe who had landed, after which the Chinese batteries concentrated their gunfire upon the Japanese warships, sinldng one destroyer and disabling another warlrip. "Other attempts to land at Shutseling were frustrated. The total Japanese casualties in these engagements are estimated at 1200, and the Chinese casualties at 300. "Several Japanese bombs were dropped in the International Settlement yesterday afternoon. The Sincere Company's disaster, which previously was believed to have been caused by a naval shell, has now been found to have been bomb estimated at between 500 and due to an explosion caused by a large lOOOlbs. One bomb landed iijside the American Navy wareliouse but did not explode."
