Used Car While Licence Was Cancelled £3 FINE INFLICTED "The man does not appear to appreciate the fact that he cannot drive a vehicle at the present time," said Mr. D. Mann, Borough Traffic Inspector, at the Hastings Magistrate 's Court this morning when Albert C. Ger'bes appeared before Mr. J. Miller on a charge of driving without a licence. Tho inspector pointed out thaf the defendant had been convicted of being intoxicated while in charge of a motoi vehicle and had been debarred from holding a driver's licence for a certain ppriod, which had not yet expired. The defendant pleaded guilty, and said that the only reason he drovo the car was that ho contemplated making a deal with it and another vehicle. The magistrate said that lie had received a letter from ihe defendant 's wife and it appeared that the previous iine of £15 had not .been paid. "Are you on sustenanco'f " asked the magistrate. Defendant: I have been for 60me time, but am not now. "The charge under ordinary circumstances is not a very serious one, but in your case it is a very serious oue1 indeed," said Mr. Miller, "W'liat it amounts to, under theso circumstances, is that you have disobeyed tho order of tho Court and could be cliarged with contemxit of Court, and sentcncod to unprisonment." Mr. Miller added that ho had received a letter from the defendant ;s wife, pointing out that thero were six children; that there was not chance of paying the fino previously imposed, and asking for the case to be reviewed. "I am looking into that matter and will consider it at a later date. "But you aro not helping your wife or family by this kind oi' thing," he said to the defendant. "I will line you £3, and that is lettiug you off very lightly. I ara doing it on account, of your family.,"
