Sir James and Lady Allen

DUNEDIN, Last Night. Sir James and Lady Allen celebrated the 60th. anniversary of their mairriage to-day. Numerous messages of goodwill were received from friends in various parts of the Dominion, inost importanee attaching to one from tho King at Balmoral Castle, Scotland,' and anotiher from the Governor-General (Viscount Galway.) The "former runs: "The King and Queen send you hearty congratulations and good wishes on your diamond wedding. — Private Secretary. " The latter reads: "I wish to cronvey to you and Lady Allen my warmest congratulations and good wishc-s on tho occasion of the celebration by you today of tho GOth anniversary of your marriage. — Galway. " Appropriato replics tov boiik thoso tclegrams have been forwarded. Sir James and Lady Allen woro mar-, ried in tho Church of Evercreech, in[ Somersetshiro, on August 23, 1S77. Sir! James was born in South Australia anli ■ came as a baby to Dunedin, where ha received his early education at a private school. He went to England for furbher education in 1860, and entered Clifton College in 1869, remaining there until proceeding to Cambridge University in 1874. He toolc tho degree of Bachelor of Arts in the year he was married and returned to Dunedin with his bride the following year. Lady Allen before her marriage was Miss Riohards, a member of a well-known Somersetshire family.
