WELLINGTON, Ths Day. Although the total entry is not so large as last year, the quality of the entries in sevefal classes of the Wellington Competition Society's annual festival has aiready earned the praise of the judges. The festival opened 6fl Saturday and held its second day yesterday. A number of performers from Hastings and Napier are among the entrants and the names of several of these have aiready appeared in the awards. The Napier Intermediate School gained first place in the children's chorus. The choir's singing Was described by tho judge, Mr. Leech, as having "very effectivo staccato, smart attack, rclcaso and good cohosioii. It was a tonet'ul choir, wdll balauced atid well controlled, and shoAVcl good pianissimo work, pretty tonal graduatidh and good diction. It was a fihe yoilng choir and Well disciplincd."' Miss ConstancO Dewsun, of Hastings, gained a first in the womOn's recitation, second in tho womCns humorous recitation, and third-equal in the Womons section of the NeiV. Zealand test recital. She was also highly cOm« mcnded for lior niusical hionologuc. Noel Mahon, Napier, was third in the song for boys, 12 to 16. The judge reinarked that he was "a very expressive young fellow with a good voice." The same competitor was second-equal in thO vocal solo and adcompaflimefit, boy or girl. MisS Valerie Schofield gained first in the song for girls under 12 years. "The winner sang with excellent artistty, good enunciation, pretty Wordpaititing'and adequate tonal suppdrt," coitiinonted the judge. Miss Noni Cdleinau, of Hastings, was third in the eoprano test gelo« . v
