W.D.F.U. CELEBRATE THEIR TWELFTH BIRTHDAY
A large' numher of members and friends attended- the 12th _ birthday meeting of the- Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, when Mrs J. H. Joll presided. A welcome was extended to the visitors,. among whom were Mesdames G. A. Maddison, A. F. Clenny, A. C. A. H5Tde, Cohen, F. Deans and other members of the Townswomen's Guild, and Mesdaiues Buck, Bird and Miss Crombie, from Havelock North Women's Institute and many other friends' of the Division. jThe meeting opened with a reading on the Women's Creed by the presi dent, which iiiterpreted the meaning of each seutento of the Creed and all it stood for, and was most interesting to listen to. All business was suspended for the meeting. Mrs C. Clark gave a most lielpfu] talk on floral work for show purposes, suggestions and points -on prep.aring exhibits, such as a ball of flowers, buttonlioles', shoulder sprays and other lioral work were given; The speaker stressed the value of fiuishinpj an exhibit to show it to the bcst advautago and told how this could be accomplished. The division was very mucb indebted to Mrs Clark, who came along at very sliort notice when the speaker of the afternoon was unable to atteiul, her kind act being much appreciated. After a delicipus tea had been enjoyed Mrs J. H. Joll lit the 12 candles 011 the birthday cake iced in pastel shades of lemon and salmon pink and made by Mrs L. W. Goldfinch. Mrs IMaddison was invited to cut the cake, and in doing so wished the division many more happy birthdays. A ' competitioo for the largest colleclion of stanips for a prize donated by Miss Ebbett, was won by Miss M. Elliott with 1760 stamps to her credit; Several thousands of stamps- wefe sent in and will be forwarded to Auckland, whero they are sold for tho good of the children' s liomes. A social half-hour was speiit by visitors who viewed a fine collection of the members' work which included beautiful specimens of croc-het work, all kinds of crafts work, such as tinsel pictures, poker work, soft toys, art silk work, knitting and many other useful and ornamental exhibits, . the wholo makiiig an interesting display. The competition for the best flower in tho garden, judged by Mrs Clark, was as follows: — Mrs Tomlinson 1 and 3, IMrs G. Joll 2. Mrs Tomlinson. had decorated tho room Avith vases of iovely camellias, decorative niandarins, spring flowers and greenery and howl of violets and snowflakes graced the president's tablc on which stood the birthday cake, the whole creating a, very festivo feeling.
