WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Pukehou Meeting A well-attended meefing of the Pukehou Woinen's Institute was held on August 17, Mrs. Schultz presiding. A welcome was extended to two new members, also visitors. The motto for the month was "Truth is a rock large enough for all to stand on.'* An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs. Smith, Otane, on the making of pine needle and raffia work baskets and vases. Also a practical thrift lesson on the making of rugs from silk sto'ekings and binder'twine. At the conclusion she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The result of the competitions were as follows: — Hand-knitted socks, Mrs. Campbell 1, Miss Milne 2, Mrs. Olsen 3. Sausage rolls, Mrs. Neave 1, Mrs. Dondl 2, Mrs. Cullen 3. The hostesses for the afternoon tea were Mesdames J. Turley, senr., Luke and Cullen. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to -a close.
