Hastings High School Rugby Team GISBORNE WINS. 40—3

GISBORNE, This Day. A runaway victory in its second in-ter-sehool match of .the season was gained by Gisborne Bojs' High School on Saturday, when it defeated the Hastings High School by 40 points to 3. The Gisborne team, which out-weighed the opposition, was superior in both back and forward divisions, and after the first stages of the game there was no doubt of the ultim'ate result. Faulty handling and bad passing on both sides led to lost chauces. On the day, however, the speedy Gisborne backs were very hard to check, and they launched sweeping rearguard moveinents time and again which eompletely denioralised the visitors' defence. From the kick-off Hastings attacked, but after a few moments Kelis gained and raced up the sideline, gaining vaiuable ground before being tackled. R. Smith sped away from a midfield ocruru, cutting tlie defence to ribbons. He carried play up to the visitors' line, where Halbert, who had been i'olJowing up fast, scored a good try under the posts. Smiler converted. Alniost immediately Halbert scored his second try when Smith, dodging tliree of the defence, sent him over to touch down near the side of the posts* Smiler failed with the kick. The ball later came out of a ruck to Halbert, who passed to Smiler,, and the latter went over to score and then convert. A high kick by one of - tho Hastings pack saw Gribben jump for the:bounce and outpace the opposition to score in a handy position. . The "kick failed. Gisborne 16,. Hastings 0.. The home team came into prominence again with a series of passing bouts which culminated in Smiler scoring another converted try. Halbert scored liis third try after a nice run coramencing in the opposition -25. Smiler - was successful with the kick. The .most' spectacular 'try of the day followed when • Gribben, receiving a pass from Smiler in his own 25, ran practically the length of the field to score "a magnificent try under the posts. Smiler failed with the kick. The visitors then assumed the offensive, and hammered away at the Black goal-line, but the Gisborne defence held. The visitors were rewarded, however, when -Thorpe scored after a good xun upfield. AIcDowell's attempt at convqrsion failed. A good run by Harris downfield carried play to the opposition goal-line, where Pettit scrambled over to touch down for an unconverted try. Tlie home team held complete mastery now, Smiler scoring after running three-quarters the length of tho field. The kick failed. A last-minute rally by Gisborne saw Smith dummy his way over to score a brilliant try. W Toroa converted. The whistle sounded a few jhinutes later with the final score: Gisborne 40 Hastings J
