BADMINTON TOURNEY

"Drop-Shot.")

Comment on Play in The Finals HAWKESWORTH'S BRILLIANCE

fNotes By

In the North Island badminton -finals held on Friday night the visitors "scooped the pool." Most of tlie tropkies went to the Wairarapa, all of whose players ehowed a high standard of skill. In the men's singles final between Hawlcesworth and Wilson the latter was palpabiy nervous. His lack of match practice and Hawkesworth 's brilliaace made the match more of an exhibition than a contest. Hawkesworth hardly missed a shot, but although Wilson showed flashes of genius, his- mistakes were many. Until the third set, the final of the | women 's singles between Miss Wade nnd Mrs. Hawkesworth was very even. Jn the third set, however, Mrs. Hawkesworth nppeared to outlast Miss Wade and in this session the winncr's superiority was as markcd as it was iu tho men's event. A feature of the women 's final was the wonderful length maintained by both players with serves and clearing shots. In the men's doubles, Wilson played ±ar better than in the singles, and he received stout-kearted assistance from his partner. Although the Wairarapa pair, Hawkesworth and Payton, v\uii by a largo margin, most of the points were well contested and some of Ihe rallies were very exciting. The women 's doubles were won by Miss Wade, of Auckland, who -liolds the New Zealand doubles title, and Miss Hosking, 0f Masterton. The losers, Mrs. Hawkesworth and Miss Dixon, failed to cornbine as well as the winners, and several times they let a shuttle drop between them, each leavmg the shot to the other. In this uiatck Mrs. Hawkesworth made more mistakes than usual, but Miss Wade showed great skill as a doubles player. In the combined doubles, the Bay pair, Wilson and Miss Glenny, put up a stout rcsistance to the Wairarapa stars, Mr. and Mrs. Hawkesworth. Wilson was iu this game a match i'or Gawkeswortk, but the winners' mutual understanding was perfect. Miss Glenny picked up a lot of difficult 6hots from her opponcnts, and at oue stago h:t three good winners in succession. This was the only game in wliich Hawkesworth was fully extended. A Iribute must be paid to Ihe liigh standard of deportment on court shown by both Hawke's Bay aud visitiug players. The Wairarapa visitors migfit have been picked, as a team, for their court nianners.
