BRITISH PROPERTY Heavy Losses by Fire at Shanghai COMPENSATION DEMANDS

The Assoeiated Eress is informcd that Eoreign Office legal experts Ure considei'ing problems arising from demands for compensation fot damage to British property. As soon as necessary guiding principles will be established and will be commUnicated to the Consul-General at Shanghai Upon whose adviee the claitns w'ill be made. It is estimated that £180,000,000 of British captial is invested in Shanghai, the bulit of whicli is in the Yangtse-poo area where the -fighting is fiercest. The Britisli TJnited Bress correspondent estimates the fire damage to British property at Shanghai at £30,000,000. New and larger fires with a front Of at least a mile have broken out 300 yards northwest of the Honkkew poliGe station north of the Bata Slioe Company's property and behind Astor Hotise. The fires in the eastern commercial district Uannot be controlled. The areas north of the Sooehow Creek is an inferno. It has been ascertained that tlie Anglo-Ametican Oil Company's installations on Goffe Island are not ablaz'e. The outbreak was in the British-owned Asiatic. Betroleum Company 's Yangtsepoo depot. A Shanghai message states that a Pumber of employees including the director fought the fire throughout the night itt the warehouses of the Maeltenzie Company and succeeded in controlling the flames. Only one o£ the buildings Was destroyed.
