(By Telegranh-
AUCKLAND, This Day. "It was pitiable," Said Mr Clive Matthows, a Waikato fariner, on his return froln Australia by the Monterey to-day. "Along tho northern coastal areas they had had no rain for two years. I travelled 600 miles through parchcd-up areas where there was not a blade of greon grass. Everything was yellow. Tlio cmaciated cattle wero in a state of slow starvation, and the wholo appcaruuco ^of the district was one of povcrty. Apparcntly years Vvill be iioeded to • bring about financial rocovory. The mainstay of the produeors at present soems to be poultry." Mr Matthews also described Ihe ravagiug eil'cct of drought around the Toowoomba wheat-producing di'strict. Only parts of these wheat lahds had been benefited by the mid-August rains, which, however, in the case of New South WaTes, were estimated to be worth £8,000,000. He saw 5000 cattle eold weekly at auction at Brisbane. The top price realised was £11, which was about 50 per cent. below recent values for prime beasts at Westfield.
