NEW CENTRAL SCHOOL
Committee Discusses Plans with Director BEAUT1FYING SCHEME "We are very hopoful' uow that the Education Department will agree to the removal of the headmaster's residence and allow the new school to be erected diagonally on the section, so as to give a true north and south aspect to the buildings," said Mr. W. S. Bennott, cliairinan of the Hastings Central School this morning. The school committee conferred with the Director of Education, Mr. N. T. Lambourne, last evening and again this ino'rning regarding the lay-out of tlie proposed new buildings and school grounds, and it is understood that ihe director was very favourably itnpressed with the committee 's reprosentationS. It was pointed out that, to accedo to the wishes of the department, who had expressed an unwillingness to move the residence from the present site on the corner of Karamu road and Soutkampton street, it would be necessary to expend. approximately £900 in filling-up an adjaeent section so as to provide a foundation for the new open-air type of school building which it is proposed to erect. The committee also submitted an outline of its proposals regarding the general lay-out of the school grounds. This work has not been possible in the past owing to doubt as to whether there wouid . be a new school constructed. However, now that there is a definite assurance that a new school is to be provided, the committee has been able to formulate plans for the carryingout of . urgentiy required ground improvements. ' ' The beautification of the school grounds will be carried out in keeping with the aims and ideals of the Hastings Borough Council," said Mr. Bennett. "While it will be possible to eifect some improvements fairly shortly, the real work of improving the grounds and the facilities will not be broached. until the autumn. We are very hopeful that we will be able to place Hastings Central right in the forefront." Associated with the committee in piacing the representations before the Dieretor wero Mr. G. A. Maddison, chairman of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, and Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P.
