Auckland Raises Wholesale Rates RETAIL PRICES UNCHANGED

By Telegraph

AbCKLAlMJ, Jjast l\igXit. The wholesale prices of milk and cream for supply to the Auckland Hospital Board, shipping companies, and ice-cream manufacturers will be increased as from September 6 as a result of decisxons reached by the Metropolitan Milk Couucil. The couucil decided last week to make no changes in the retail prices, but the question of wholesale rates was deferred until to-day. These particular rates were oonsidered in committee and subsequently the prices fixed were confirmed iu open board. An increase in the cost of production and distribution was given as the reason for the increase in the wholesale prices. The council decided to fix a iiat rate of 10]d a gallon as the price to be paid to the farmer for liis milk, irrespective of whether it is to be separated into cream or sold to the Hospital Board, shipping companies or icecream manuiacturers. At preseut tlie rate is 6£d a gallon l'or milk sold to ice-cream manufacturers, and 9d a gallon for milk sold to the Hospital Board /and to shipping companies. In order to meet the extra costs, the council decided to increase the various internal margins. The result is that the price of milk supplied to the Hospital Board will be increased from ls to 1/l^d a gallon. The shipping companies,- which at present pay 1/- a gallon for milk, will be requiied to pay 1/2. Redueed cream supplied to one particular company will be advanced in price from 7/6 to 8/2 a gallon. Milk supplied to ice-cream manufacturers will rise iu price from 9jd to l/l^d a gallon, and cream for icecream manuJacturers will be increased from '8/- to 12/3 a gjallon. Ice-cream "mix" containing less than 40 per cent. of butterfat will advance from 1/11 to 2/11 per lb of butterfat.
