STRENUOUS PLAY
Badminton Tourney Ends at 3.30 a.m. Quite apart from the effort required in aetual play iu badminton, participation in an open tournament calls for an abundance of energy. Four nights wero set aside for the North Island and Hawke's Bay championslups and handicaps tournament in Hastings and the total liours of play was nearly 30. The final session was an exceptionally long oue, commeneing at shorily after five o'clock yesterday aftemoon and contiuning right on through the night and early hours of the morning until nearh 3.30 o'clock. A remarkable performance was recorded by J. Payton, of Auckland, who from midnight on had a particularly arduous and strenuous time. He was called upon to contest five finals. and lwo semi-iinals during that period. That ko sliould be successf al in almost every gaino is a tribute to his ability, pcrtinacy, physical fitness and abundance of energy.
