Lengthy Crime List in Wairoa Court

YVAiitUA, Xjast XMgn? Charged with carrying on business ar a bookinaker at North Clyde, Frederick Jewell was fined £20 Avhen he appeared in tho Wairoa Magistrate's Court before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M. Jewell said he was only taking "doubles" on the Grand National. He had nearly £100 in his possessiou when caught. Several other breaches of the Gamiug Act were punished with fines. A fairly lengthy criminal list came before the Magistrate. For disorderly conduct at a dance hall, Clive Hammond was fine.d £3 with costs 18/6. Joe Hati and Peter Manu (Mr F. H. Jones), who allegedly took part in a fight in Carroll street, Wairoa, were fined £1 and costs. Roderick Bell for petty theft at Waikokopu was fined £2. James Henry Scott, for using obscene language at Mohaka was fined £5. A Maori named Darkie Joe Karetu, was fined &2 on a eharge of converting a motor-ear belonging to Pomare Waewae. Apia Y/hoanga for driving without a licence was fined £2. Charged with failing to report an accident in which he had been involved at Putere and in which a girl was serxously injured, Hute Aha was fined £2 and costs £1 1/-.
