Appointee Bitterly Attacked in Senate ; ' ' "" WASHINGTON^ Aug. 18. The Senate confirmed the appointnient of Senator H. L. Black as a judge of the Supreme Court by 63 votes to 16, f ollowing • an. hour's bitter debate, in which Mr. Blaclc was attacked for ;alleged affiliation with the Klu Klux .Klan and anti-Al Smith campaign in the 1928 elections. It was intimated that the opponents, who included Senators Byrd, Tyding;, Johnson (California) and Lodge, aro still not satisfied with Mr. Black 's' cligibility for Supreme Court membership, and the question may be taken to tho Suprcmc Court itself. President Rooseve.lt named Senator H. L. Black to sticceed Mr. Willis Van .Devinter, a member of the so-called Cons-Avative wing of tho Supreme •Court, who "Tetired in June.
