Wellington Chinese Interested in War News

WELLINGTON, This Day. Are Wellington Chinese interested in the present conflict at Shanghai between the Chinese and Japanese? An answer can bc gained any morning at the city markets, where some hundreds of Chinese gather daily to replenish their stocks. On two central col'iinns rn the centre of the main Allen street market are posted each morning a translation in Chinese hieroglyphics of the war news. This news is eagerly absorbed by an intensely-interested group of Chinese ejaculating excited comment as they grasp the significanee of the message. An hour or so after the news had been posted yesterday, and while the auctioneers were still busy s'elling, a group of about 20 Chinese were obseived, iutent on the dramatie utlerauce of a central figure. He was, with s-bining eyes and a wealth of gesture, do&cr'.bing tbe reported aecidental drop- 1 ping oi bombs from Chinese aeroplanes over the foreign quarter of Shanghai. it- is ofton said that the Chinese are mexpressiva but this mau's gestures were eloquent. His soaring arms depicted the floating of the planes; fchen he Ptiuek his breast to illustrate when the Chinese ilyers were shot down, and then he pointed down to show how the iincontrolled bombs fell earthward. There was no mistaking the jubilation caused by the news that the Japanese air fieet had sufEered signally at the hands of the Chinese fighting planes. One Chinese, who was ques'tioned, thought ifc was the beginning of a ".big fight for long time."
