Arbor Day at Porangahau. Arbor Day, 1937, will be remembered by the pupils of the Porangahau Seool, for they planted 42 Native trees in the school botanical garden. The planting was carried out with due ceremony, and the chairman of the .committee, Mr Black, in a short address, ioipressed on the children the value of trees to New Zealand, and urged everyone to do their bit in the preservation of Native bush. Porangahau Golf. The Porangahau Ladies' Golf Clnb played the fourth round of the Maelean Cup on Saturday. The best cards were: — Mrs. Stewart, 101, 22, 79 net; Mrs. R. Ropiha, 118, 32, 86. t Building Permits in Waipukurau. • In his report to last night 's meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council, the clerk-engineer, Mr.. H. B. Smart, stated that two permits had been issued for the erection of residence in Waipukurau during July. One is in Reservoir road, .at an estimated cost of £900, and one in Wallaee road, at an esticnated cost of £1290. One permit had been issued for addition to a dwelling at an estimated cost of £98. Licences in Waipukurau Borough. Thirty-seven motor drivers ' licences (yielding £9 5/- in fees), two heavy traffic licences (£7 13/-), and one hoarding licence (£1 15/-) were issued in the Waipukurau borough during July, according to the report presented to last evening 's Borough Council meeting by the eugineer-clerk, Mr. H. B. Smart. Angle Parking One Side. At last night 's nnebting of the Waipukurau Borough Council, it was decided to instruct the engineer to get angle parking lines, with the necessary notices, put on the south side of Ruataniwha street, from the Post Office to che Hawke's Bay Farmers' store. There will be a 45-minute time limit, while on the other side parallel parking will still be allowed, but with a, 10-minute time limit. To Cut Out Rail Crossing. The Waipukurau Borough Council, at last night 's meeting, decided to send to the Minister of Railways and Public Works a suggestion for a deviation in the line through Waipukurau, and the moving of the station with the object of cutting out the present dangerous crossing at the end of the main street. The 'suggestion, if adopted, would mpan there would be no necessity for the overhead bridge that has been suggested, and that stock would not have to be driven over the line. The proposed new site of the station would be near the borough pumping station. An aerial photograph, with the suggested deviation drawn in, is to be sent to Wellington, Labour Party Dance. Meoibers of the Otane branch of the Labour Party held another of their dences in aid of the election campaign fund on Saturday. Although not as well attended as usual those present spent a most enjoyable time dancing to the popular melodies played by Mrs. Meta. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr. S. Irwin. A very dainty supper was served by members of the social committee under the supervision of Mrs. Huston. A competition, which materially assisted the funds, was won by Mr. McCauley.
