Man Fonnd on Roadside in Masonic Regalia THEFT CHARGE FOLLOWS

WAEROA, Last ■Nigkt# An arrest with eomie aocompani« ments, was made at Wairoa early tkis morning, and as a result John William McClure, aged 59 years, was charged before Mr A. A. Fraser, J.P., witk hav-f ing broken into the Wairoa County Council Oflice and with stealing stamps to tke value of 19/6. He was brougkt up and remanded until Friday, when other charges will be preferred. The police story was that shortly after 6 a.m. the eleaher engaged at the County office, on proceeding to take up work, found tke accused asleep before a fire in" one of tke rooms. Ske tken rang up Sergeant Clark, wko, jumping out of bed got off tke mark quickly, and kalf-dressed scoured tke vicinity in widening circles, :out as far as Te Uki. Iji tke meantime, tke County Clerk, Mr B. G. Signall, and tke engineer, Mr Hawtkorne, were aroused, and came on tke scene. Sergeant Clark sent tkem in tke Napier road direction, and at Turiroa tkey, came on the man sitting by tke roadside wrapped in some Masonic regalia and surrounded witk a number of bottles of ckoice liquors, Tke county offieials promptly arrested tke man, and meeting tke Sergeant in a few momenti ke was kanded over to tke police Ber" geant and Constable McAlpine. In applying for a remand, Sergeant Clark stated tkat McClure kad been walking down from Auckland, wkere ke kad been living for some time. A number of minor tkefts and breakiugs kad occurred in towns tkrougk wkick ke kad passed, and tke police desired to make ^ further inquiries. , ; ,
