CHRISTCHUECH, Last Night. After giving a mediocre display for most of tho game, Canterbury struek form with a vengeance at. the very elose of the mateh against Otago at Lancaster Park to-day, scoring three tries in five minutes to win by 14 points to 6. Canterbury in that last iive minutes looked like a team which • might put up a good showing against the Springboks next Saturday. Canterbury led by a eonverted try to a penalty goal at half -time, the try ; being a neat one by Chinnery. Play | had been of a scrambling nat-ure ; through the spell and it continued that j way until, with about ten miuutes to go, ; another penalty goal by Bolton put Otago, holders of the Kanfurly Sliield | lapt year, one point ahead. Tken the Canterbury backs began to run and handle as if insp^red and there was always a solid phalanx of heavy forwards to give them able support. Tho | Otago team was a match for Canterbury right up to that last ten minutes : and Quaid, Barnes, Vosailagi and Murj doch were the leaders of the pack which held Canterbury in tight and was superior in the line-onts. Howden, at half, and Berghan and Murray, five-eighths. were game defenders and on many occasions they punched holes through the Canterbury defence and it was only lack of understanding with the three.quarter line which kept Otago from scoring on several occasions. Bolton, the Otago full-back, was absolutely reliable and his two penalty goals were excellent kicks. There yere times when the Canterbuiy forwards seemed to lose the advantage they established at the start of the game but. when a big effort was needed they drove the opposition before them and gave their baek line wonderful chanees. They were all workers with Williams, Whillans and Foley promincnt in the loose rnshcs and Pablecheque, Hattersley and Fleming working splendidly in the tight. McAuliffe and Garrett got through a tremendous amount of hard work. Behind the Canterbuiy pack Chinnery and Eathorne both played sound games, Chinnery being the outstanding wing on the ground. At full-back Nolan played .a great game, his xesource and detormination saving his side on several occasions. * For Canterbury the scorers were I Chinnery, Whillans (two) and Pawson, iwhile McAuliffe eonverted one try, For Otago Bolton kicked two penaltiea.
