Sir,— The statement, made by somebody or other at a returned soldiers gathering in the south, that a Britis vessel on which he served started the Great War on its own before the end of July 1914 is too unbelievable to merit publication. , Admiral Roger Keyes returned to _ Harwich • either on August 5 or 6, which he dQes not make clear; after a ^ sweep towards the Heligoland Bight ^ which commenced at 3 a.m. on the 5tli. He states: "The Lance, -which fired the . first British shot in the war, was landing 22 German wounded.
