LETTERS TO EDITOR

Hedges and the Council Sir, — There has appeared in your col« umns of late quite a lot about the cutting of trees and the pulling out of hedges. These letters remind me of a Biblical quotation which runs something like this, "Some people Jove darkness rather than light because their deeds are t evil. ' ' Perhaps the quotation could' he made to read ••-thus: "Some people love trees and hedges because of the same. source." Why all the fnss? When one considers the expense that is incurred every year to have these hedges cut and trimmed, that in itself should be a good argument why they should be ro-* moved. But there is another reason, ' with the hedges removed, Cornwall Park will then be properly designated, for then it will be a "Public Park" in every sense of the word. Some writers inform us that already children and others have mapped out "short cuts," and that the park will be ruined because of wandering stock. As to the former, those writers who have exhibited such an interest in our reserves, will have a golden opportu* nity to put into effeet the request so

often seen on notice boards when visiting parks, viz.: "Ratepayers, Protect Your Own Property," and by admonishing those who see fit to abuse, they will have the satisfaction in knowing they have done something worthy of the town. As for ' wandering stock, this is now a thing of the past, now we have a ranger who is very much alive to the job. No one who has travelled abroad, or who has studied reserves in other parts of the world, or tourists who pass through , Hastings from time to timo could be influenced, or agree with. the stupid nonsense which has been ; written in criticism concerning the actiona of our City Fathers in this respect, because they have seen for themselves how pleasant and attractive a park can be made by having a clear space. I think when the scheme ia properly developed we will wonder ' why the Council have been so slow in coming lo such a decision. It is pleasing to see that we have tepreseniatives who have an eye for "Beauty" and are endowed with "Vision." Iet us then congratulate them, xather than abuse. — -Yours, vetc,, PROGRESS.
