Express Smashes Butcher's Van.

•NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. When his delivery van was struck by the north-bound express to-night at Manutahi, the driver of the van, C. S. Barclay, a butcher, of Manutahi, south .Taranaki, suffered head injuries, a fracture of the right leg and shock, f rqin which he died three hours later at the Hawera Hospital. The impact was so severe that the ivan, one of the modern type, was wrecked and the debris was scattered ,over a considerable . area. The driver iand a major part o± * the van were jcarried a chaih past the cattlestop. i The train crew gave all possible assistance. With the aid of a nearby resident the injured man was placed in the guard's van of the express and taken to Hawera, where the train arrived an hour late.
