BULL

[a]

Trees and Sentimenl Sir, — Why this continua.1 uutcryj ab3.it trees? One would thxnk thafi the cutting dowxx of a tree branded a' man as a disciple ■ of Cain. There is 8 lot of frothy sentimentality flying about at the present time. We are living in the lap of luxury in New Zealand because a few hardy souls had. the courage to come here and cut down trees and clear the scrub. Those persons who want^ to go "native" should go and build. a pah out at the back of thc Whakararas and live in it on wild pig, and wood pigeon. The sigbt of the goiden kowhai for a brief period eaoh year would no doubt be ample compensa*tion for the loss of this soft European civilisation. Perhaps they cotlld find a CQuple of men who would be. prepared to give up the benefits of sustenance for a fortnight and jvho would carry in a radio set and some spare batteries. By tuning in when Mr Savage is talking) the "nfew natives" could then be heartened in their pursuit of slushy sentimentality. These popular outcrfes axe nearly always foolish. There were the oolumns in your paper about the site of the Clock Tower. But the Mayor was right. Then there was another outcry recently about the Civic Square and once again I am sure His Worship will be proved right. Nqw there is a new. ' outburst about Cornwall Park hedges. Only when the job is done will we know who is right. It will then be too much to expect any of the critics to come forward and say "Thank you" to the council. No, we are all croakers. — Yours, ,etc.,
