Sir, — 1 notice tliat the Hon. Minister of luternal Affairs requests that Arbor Day — or tree-planting day — bo observed in every city, towu, or borough of the Dominion by wganised ccr.cmo"io.s during whieh ornameutal trees and shrubs, native tn preferenco, should be planted. Does our Prngress League propose to do anything special on this occasion? If not, it will miss a splendid oppor-tnnity-of justifying its existence in the eyes of the public. In fhis district we havo neglected or do not apprseiats ths
uative trees for some -unknown reason, unless it is because our nurserymen do uot cultivate them. I know of a firm, in Taranaki whieh make a speciality of growing native" trees, from whom I have already got a good deal of information, and whieh would be willing to send one of its staff to any .district to advise on the selection of site, suitable trees and suitable conditions. I am aware of the difficultios an.d cbstacles in the way of planting trees iu Hastings, such as the electric and 'phone wires; also that low bushiness of growth must be avoidedt as it affords a screen to bad-intentioned people; nevertheless, I am sure there are numerous trees that will fulfil all the Pflii rHtinris rprinirp.rl — Ynnra pf.r»
