WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Eskdale Gathering • The monthly meeting of the Eskdale Women' s Institute was held on Thursday with a fair attendance of members and four visitors, among them Mrs Osborne, president of Tangoio, and Mrs McHardy, Bay View. Tbe motto read was "The wing of friendship never moults a featber," and the competition six hen eggs. Tliere were only hve entries. ltesults: Mrs Martel 1, Mrs King 2, and Miss BJair 3. August is bird moutli and a very interesting talk on native birds and imported birds was ably giv.en by Mr E. L. Cullen, M.P. Final arrangenients were made for the group meetihg to be held in the Eskdale Hall on August 18. Commencing at 10.30. A newsy letter enclosing 1 a programme was received from the link at Eskdale (England). 1 Tlie best bloom for the month was won by Miss Blair. There were three entries. The programme committee appointed was Mesdames Kyle, Kirkliam and Clark and the Misses Conway, Kirkham 1 and Kyie. 1 Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Conway and Miss BJair. Their competition, "Napier business folk," was won by Mrs Osborne. The reports of the .sick committee, ( Mrs Williams and Miss 1). Kirkham, ! were received. . It was decided to have a bring-and- : buy stall atr the Septeinber meeting for J federation funds. : Two card evenings were held during ] the month, the first being at Mrs King's ' residence, "The Grange". Owing to the ' prevalence of colds this was only a ' small gathering. Card winners were . Miss Blair and Mr Conway. 1 Mrs and Miss Blair wero hostesses ^ for the second evening, there being { quite a number present. Winners were Miss Wilson and Mr E. Martel. A ( hat-trimming competition for men was , won by Mr J. Spence and a Pandora' b . box by Mrs King. f Tbe next evening is to be held on ihe j i'ourth Tuesday at Mrs Spence' s. ^ ! ?

ENGAGEMENT © The engagement is announced of Ethel Addis, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. It. Burden, Mangateretere, Hastings, to Keith John, younger son of Mr and Mrs J. W. B. Macdonald. Clyde road, Wairoa.
