MONTEEAL — Erom the time the first directory of Canadiam publications appeared in 1S92 until the publication of Ihe 30 th edition, just 'off the press, Canadian piiblications have increased from a total of 1033 to 1797. In 1892 there Were 97 daily newspapers, to-day. there are 117. Weeklies have grown from 653 to 1006, semi* monthlies from 20 to 57, andj monthlies from 217 to 454. There are 31 publieations, each of which is 87 years old or more. The oldest newspaper in Canada is the Chronicle-Telegraph of Quebec, l'ounded in 1764. The only other survivo'r ffoin' the 18th centjiry is the .Montreal Gazette, with a career wMch dates back to 1778. ■ The farmer had fallen into the well. Treading water vigorously, he shouted for his wife. "Hold on!" she cried. "I'll call the men from the field." . fWait a minute," he said. "What's the time?" • " Eleven-thirty. ' ' "Then bide a wee.
