POPE DOES NOT RECOGNISE FRANCO'S GOVERNMENT
(Eeceived 5, 11.0 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, Aug. 4. A communique has been issued denying that General Franco 's government J?a{, been recognised, it says: " Arrangements have not been qhanged, TJbe Holy See is still represented in insurgent Spain by the Archbishop of loledo, but not diplomatically or oflfi cially. Monsignor Antoniutti has goue to Spain n^t for official but rather hu* manitarian purposes, also to reconeile Basque Catholics with General Franco. Don Ohurruca has taken over the existing post of semi-of&cial representaiive of General Franco to the Vatican. " The British United Press correspondent at Salamanca says it is officially announced that the Vatican has recognised General Franco ;s Government. The recognition wa.s preceded by Monsignor Antoniutti 's visit to General Franco. It was then agreed says an (lfieial announcement, to grant Franco V Vatican representative, Don Pablo Churruea, the status of ofiieial diplooatic representative with the rank of charge d'affaires.
