CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. Hcavy rain last night made the ground at Riccarton eoft and frequent showers made things unpleasant ioi training work this morning. Some trainers did not visit the course, giving their horses walking exerciso pn the roads. Those who patronised the tracks gave their chaTges light tasks on the sand. Golden Lap went smartly in a school over' two hurdles. Corowa and Fireguard - wero eompanions over eix hurdles. Corowa, after being a trifle slow over the early obstacles, improved as he went on. Fireguard gave a good display, but slipped going to the last hurdle, and stumbled when he landed, dislodging his rider. The Auckland steeplechaser, Irish Comet, a reeent arrival, was out doing ea'sy pacing. Armayle, Rodeur and Wild Career arrived from the south last night. This morning 's arrivals from the north were Clarion CaR, Brigadore, Fleeting Arrow, Catalogue and Old Surrey. Red Sun was out doing walking exer cise this morning. One of his joints ii causing trouble and it is not certain that he will be ablfi to i%ce next week Billy Boy has been getting through useful tasks and though allowed tc drop out of the Grand National it ii hoped that he may be able to race latei at the meetiqg, possibly in the Lincols Steeplechase on the last day.
