4/6 a Case for Fruit Marketed Locally CANTERBURY NOT SATISFIED

(From

WELLINGTON, This Day. "I have yet to meet the fruitgrower who tliinks that it is reasonable. We haven't got them in Canterbury," said Mr N. Goldsbury, of Canterbury when objecting to a clause in the annual report of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation at yesterday conference at Wellington. The clause, dealing with the £40,000 set aside by tlie Government ior the subsidising of the xeaiisations of fruit sold on .the local market, stated that the average growers had received reasonable returns ior local saies, it further stated that this fact? together with the increosed guarantee on export fruit would considerably strengthen the position oi the federation. "The average production in Canterbury is two eases per tree, so that 1/6 a case is not reasonable," contmued Mr Goldsbury. "It is only in the high-producing areas that it is possible to market fruit at 4/6 g. case.." Mr Goldsbury thdn moved that thc clause should be deleted. "I would like to know if growers consider that the export guar.antee is satisfactory," asked Mr J. A. Gampbell, Director of Horticulture. "No, no," canie the reply from many of the deleg/ates. Mr Cainpbeil : 11 it were. then the local guarantee of 4/6 is bettei. "We haven't got a local guarantee," said Mr L. E. Robinson. "We don't want that kind of stuff here. Mr Campbell wants to watch his step." Mr Campbell pointed out that, speaking generally, the allowanee for the local market was more favourable than that for export. Mr Goldsbury: Can Mr Campbell tell us how much better? Mr Campbell: I am not going into details. The motion to delete the clause was not carried.
