Intermediate School for Hastings RELIEVE OVERCROWDING The principle underlying the "ep* tablishment of an intermediate school and continuity of control of primary, Intermediate' and second schools wai favoured by the Parkvale School Cominittee at the monthly meeting last* evening. [ "In view of the coming visit of Mr N. Lambourne, Director of Education, to Hastings on August 20 we considered it advisable to discuss among our. selves the question of the proposed intermediate school in Hastings," reported the chairman, Mr J. Stiekland, thi» morning. "The committee was de® finitely in favour of the idea of providing facilities for exploratory work with the older pupils of the' primary schools and felt that the establishment of an intermediate or junior high school would meet this need. "The committee, however, was concerned at the present over-crowding of the classes, and felt that it was de® sirable that some assurance should be given that the classrooms vacated by the pnpils attending the intermediate schools when established would be used by reducing the number of pupils in the remaining classes and increasing the actual number of classes," he said. "In other words, we are anxious to have the same number of classes as at present, but to have the number of pupils in those classes reduced.n Mr Stiekland mentioned that the committee was also of the opinion that primaTy, intermediate and secondary schools should be directly controlled by the Education Board, with a definite continuity of eontroL The resolutions passed by the meet* ing were as follow:— - (1) That this committee is agreeable to the principle underlying the establishment of ea intermediate school in Hastings, provided that the overcrowding in Ihe primary classes is eliminated and that additonal classes and teachers are provided. to occupjr the rooma vacated by the pupils trans. ferred to tho intermediate school.
